How to capture macro photos without using expensive macro lenses?

Updated: Sep 8, 2021

Macro photos without macro lenses, sounds amusing? Yeah, it is then.

It's pretty amazing & as well as amusing. But a few months ago It was very unknown to me. I was trying to click smaller to smallest things as flower buds, insects & more, as they could look bigger, but for numerous times I had to let it go.

Then I started researching a bit about macro photography & I found a pretty interesting & easier way to turn my macro ideas into reality.

But how could it be possible?

Now coming to the point where I'm going to expose n explain the idea. Actually that's pretty cheap but useful tool, which made my macro captures easier & amusing is a pack of 'Extension tube'.

3 ring extension tube

How to use 'Extension Tube' as an easy-breezy technique for macro photography?

Extension Tubes are pretty cheaper than dedicated macro 'lenses' while your budget is an issue. Some people are knowledgeable about these tubes, a few aren't.

Let's get to know this better. Every single lens has a specific focusing distance & while you're doing macro photography, it could be an issue. Actually while capturing macro with lenses & you're getting in pretty close to your tiny subject as you want your subject look very sharp & distinct, but your lens won't be able to focus that much closer & it gets blurry instead of getting sharp.

At these times you have two options. 1. Buy a dedicated & as well as expensive macro lens or 2. You could use 'Macro Extension Tube' at a very cheap rate but in a very useful way. These tubes extend the focusing distance of your lens & help you capture your subject extremely Sharpen & Chrystal clear.

You can attach these tube rings one at a time or attach these altogether between your camera body & lens.

But I would recommend you to use these one by one as your requirement. But of course it's your own choice.

While I was trying to use these rings altogether, didn't get a better result rather than one at a time. But make sure you get the right type 'Extension Tube' with your camera body while purchasing it. You can use any lens further & turn it into a macro lens using this.

Which lens should you use with your Extension tube?

Extension tube is basically 3 ringed (12 mm, 36 mm, 20 mm), you could use it as your requirement like I wrote earlier. Make sure which kinda macro photos you're gonna capture & how much bigger, detailed you want it to look like, then decide your lens, after that you could easily select your required ring of your Extension tube. If you try once, it would get a pretty easy-breezy technique with time & practice. It's all about practice, you know. I use my 50mm. prime lens & 70-300 mm zoom lens to attach with those tube rings & I do it as per my requirement of course.

Here I'm gonna show you how would the camera body look like, while you attach your 70-300 mm. zoom lens with all of your Extension tube rings & then show you three of my captures using three different Extension tube rings.
